Sit back and enjoy a trip to another dimension with your child!

Best for ages 5-9. Nicely imaginative and different tales for kids.

Have you ever wondered what pillowcases talk about during the day? Or why cottonwood poplars shed pollen like snow? Or how forest elves might solve their central heating problems? Cloud-slides and stars, dipped in dandelion, will delight readers of all ages in the happily imaginative, gently fantastical tales of Jacquelyn Wilson’s collection. From mythical natural history to magical computer communication, with cops and robbers, duckbills and trees, and, of course, Elves, Bikes, and Unicorns, these stories (and even one poem) are perfect for sharing with kids, inspiring and rewarding imagination with their nicely different points of view and natural characters (yes, even natural pillowcases) and humor.

Elves Bikes Unicorns and Other Fantasies eBook Jacquelyn Wilson

The very first story within this book sets the tone of the rest. It is from the perspective of a pillowcase, introducing the reader to a world in which all objects are not only sentient, but that they also talk with one another, and are filled with a sense of wonder at the world around them, described in loving detail.

This book creates new folk lore explaining cottonwood trees, why leaves change color in the fall, and much more. My favorite is probably the second story, about the elves and the poplars. They have the feel of fairy tales, although without so much of the dark aspects seen in many. For the most part, the lore creates a sense of innocence and beauty, as well as an imaginative glimpse at a hidden, magical world that we humans cannot see.

I am looking forward to reading this book to my five year old. I believe it is exactly the sort of thing he will enjoy.

“Snowflakes are much harder to weave than flowers!” says one story, easing the tension after high-speed chase and escape. These stories are woven with fantasy and fun, a nicely light touch, offering the gentle voice of a well-tuned bedtime read.

Disclosure I was given a free ecopy and I’m happy to offer my honest review.
"Elves, Bikes, Unicorns and Other Fantasies" is a children's book written by Jacquelyn Wilson. This e-book was approximately 63 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at the time of writing this review.

Please Note the author provided me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Some thoughts on "Elves, Bikes... Fantasies"

1.) a series of very short stories meant for a child, probably in the 5 - 9 year age grouping. (with or without an accompanying parent, depending of the reading skill level of the child).

2.) well written and edited. The prose is simple enough for a child with basic reading skills.

3.) cover art... an attractive image that reflects the theme and tone of the stories within.

4.) the stories are basically stand alone vignettes but several have recurring characters.

5.) the stories range from very benign tales involving a pair of pillowcases, to a thrilling run-for-your-life chase by a T-Rex. However all stories are void of any violence, with all ending happily and on a positive note.

6.) the only missing element from this little book was a lack of illustrations. I think any child's book is enhanced by colorful drawings or sketches as they tend to hold the child's interest and possibly make the child want to return to a favorite story to read again.

Impression
A well written and edited book meant to entertain a younger child.
Some appropriate 'action' illustrations would have been the icing on the cake for this little book.
As it is... 4 Stars.

I'm always interested in picking up work from new and indie authors, so when Jacquelyn e-mailed me to see if I'd be interested in reading her book, I of course said yes! This e-book is a collection of short stories that range from tales of fairies and elves living in the forest, to brief stories that animate everyday objects like bikes or pillowcases. If you're one of those people who's never been interested in this type of fantasy, you'll probably wonder what the big deal is; what I've always found interesting about this type of short fantasy writing exercise is that it gives you an instant idea of whether the author can invoke an image within a very few words. To write one of these short stories you have to have a very large imagination and an ability to paint a complete picture for your readers with just a few words. A couple of my favorite stories involved explanations for the creation of pearls and why Queen Anne's Lace looks as it does.

For some reason when I was reading these stories I kept thinking about the illustrated books of short fantasy stories that used to be so popular for adults and children alike. Nowadays I think adults don't spend enough time reading fantasy and kids have moved on to video games instead of stories built around imagination. I don't have kids of my own but if I did these are the sort of stories I would read to them. They're lively and they make you look at everyday things like clouds or trees with a little more imagination.
I'm very impressed with the storytelling talents of this author. She has turned each short story into an adventure which children will like to have read to them. I loved "Fairy Snow" which is very elegantly written. The elves who live in the forest is very harmoniously written with respect to their surrounding nature. Other stories are about flower fairies, gnomes, and winter sprites. Did you know bicycles and unicorns are related? Also, Mana the ant has a story, too, as well as Cephan the catfish has quite the adventure. As I read these stories I could envision the illustrations that would benefit children. The illustrations can set the location of these tales and be more interesting for kids. I think these stories would be better enjoyed as separate children's books with pictures and/or illustrations. The author is certainly very talented, and I recommend reading these tales to enjoy the adventures.
